Stendahl - Charterhouse of Parma. Buttering: in big, fat, unmelted gobs.
Peter Unger - Philosophical Relativity. Buttering: the banana saw some butter once.
Fritz something or other - Way of the Brush. Buttering: holy buttery crap. Dutch dude that apprenticed with some Chinese brush dude for 15 years. He writes somewhere that the core of Chinese and Japanese painting is the focused mind, the regulation of breathing, and the single stroke made in clear mind and direct spirit - and that it's the same spirit as the truly great karate strike, judo throw, or sumo grapple. Then: "We in the West have at least one activity that has the same connection of mindfulness, regulation of breathing, and the single perfect motion - it is golf. Which may explain why this sport, that involves so much walking in nature and clearing of the mind to acheive the perfect stroke, is so popular with the Japanese."
