"Enoshima is a small island... about 25 miles south of Edo. A small inlet on the island forms a pond called Chigo-ga-fuhi, where a young boy is said to have drowned himself when he learned that a temple priest had fallen in love with him. The priest followed the boy to his watery grafe. Toyoharu's depiction has little to do with the tragic story, but instead emphasizes the pond's fame for scenic beauty and ample fishing."
